Our Story

How White Oak Started

White Oak Tree & Landscaping was built around a straightforward belief: tree work done by skilled climbers, people who understood the tree from the inside out, produced better results for homeowners than approaches that prioritized speed over precision. What started as a small operation on the Connecticut shoreline grew steadily through referrals, repeat clients, and a reputation for taking on the jobs that required real technical skill.

The work that built this company was not the easy jobs. It was the trees nobody else wanted to touch. The ones leaning toward houses. The ones tangled in power lines in tight backyards. The storm-damaged oaks that required someone to get up into the canopy and think through the removal piece by piece before making a single cut. That kind of work demands a specific skill set, and building a crew around it is how White Oak became the company it is today.

Matt has been working at height for over a decade and grew up right here on the shoreline. Before trees, he came up through roofing and exterior carpentry, which meant heights and rigging were second nature by the time he made the switch to tree work. Like most good climbers, he started on the ground, learning how to take a tree apart piece by piece without tearing up the yard, and worked his way into the canopy from there.

These days Matt is the climber we put on the complicated jobs. An 80-foot dead oak over a historic home in Essex. A tight Madison backyard where the septic field rules out the bucket truck. He is quiet, focused, and good with a rope. The kind of climber who makes hard removals look boring, which is exactly what you want.

Derek came to tree work the long way around. Before he ever put on a harness, he spent years in landscaping and plant health care around Branford and Guilford, which means he understands how coastal conditions shape the trees out here. He knows what years of salt air and shoreline wind do to a red oak and can usually tell you where a tree is going to fail before he ever climbs it.

Derek's reputation on the crew is straightforward. He is safe, he is clean, and he communicates. Whether it is careful canopy pruning in Old Saybrook or a messy storm cleanup in Clinton, he is calling his plan down from the tree, watching out for the ground crew, and leaving the property looking like he was never there.
